The film, I Don’t Know How She Does It, tells the story of Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker), a financial executive who tries to juggle the demands of work, family, and marriage.

Keeping all those balls in the air proves too much for Kate as the “momsters” at her children’s school, the backstabbers at work, and the double-standards from society drain her mentally and physically.

Kate’smother-in-law laments over a “simpler” time when gender roles were defined as “bread winner” and “housewifte.” Those days are long gone, replaced with blurred gender roles for the home and for the the workplace. As the movie demonstrates, peering through the blurred lines makes it harder to find the right person to blame.

The film has received mixed reviews. Even though 40% of those polled at Rotten Tomatoes liked it, of many critics called the film a weak comedy infused with archaic views regarding gender roles. Even the sparse cutesy, sweet moments were not enough to save this this movie, which received a 17% on the “Tomatometer” from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes.

Is the message of the movie less relevant because of an unfavorable critical analysis of the film? It’s interesting that 40% of the people polled at Rotten Tomatoes liked it. If you saw the movie, did you like it?
