‘The Grey’ Director Joe Carnahan Talks Controversial Ending

The Internet is a buzz about Director Joe Carnahan’s controversial ending in the movie, The Grey. Carnahan did not opt for the standard “happily ever after” ending.

Initially, this bothered me because of my sentimental, good always wins, and love conquers all philosophical nature.

Therefore, at first I didn’t like the movie because of the ending. Every turn they made was wrong, every decision was a mistake. I couldn’t fight back the tears at the end it was so sad.

Upon reflection, I remembered that with the luxury of life comes the inevitable death we all face at some point in our lives. But, we don’t go to movies to get hit with these unpleasant realities. Audiences echoed my sentiments through ticket sales according to CinemaScore.

Carnahan stands by his decision. To end the film any other way would be “spoon-feeding the audience,” and he wasn’t interested in doing that.

According to Carnahan, “you have to decide for yourself: is it a movie about a man living and dying or is it a movie about a man fighting a wolf. I think the movie’s about something as massive and as mysterious as life and death.”

I agree with Carnahan interpretation of the movie’s ending. Read my other posts for my thoughts on this:
